Patna: Bihar’s power grid buckled under soaring demand on Tuesday night as electricity consumption hit an all-time high of 8,303 megawatts at 9:50pm, breaking all previous records in the state. The previous peak stood at 8,005 MW, but with temperatures surging across the region, consumption continued to climb even as the report was filed. According to power officials, this unprecedented spike in usage has not disrupted supply, with uninterrupted electricity being maintained across the state.
Mahendra Kumar, Managing Director of South Bihar Power Distribution Company (SBPDCL), confirmed that supply systems remained stable despite the surge. “All engineers are on high alert. There have been no reports of power cuts, and fuse call complaints are under control,” he said, crediting improved infrastructure and regular maintenance for the resilience.
Skill registered a record load of 4,354 MW, while North Bihar Power Distribution Company (NBPDCL) also set a new benchmark with 3,949 MW. In the capital, Patna, electricity usage neared the previous high of 811 MW recorded on May 13. Officials suggested this record might also be surpassed by midnight.
To manage the spike, engineers across the state have been deployed to monitor and respond to any issues in real time. In Patna, where power consumption remains consistently high during the summer, complaints to fuse call centres have remained within normal limits.
PESU (Patna Electricity Supply Undertaking) General Manager Shriram Singh stated that round-the-clock monitoring is underway. “Our teams are working in shifts to ensure uninterrupted supply. The fuse call centres are operational 24/7, and any reported issues are being swiftly addressed,” he added.
