Patna: In a story that has captured hearts across Bihar, Shubham Kumar, the UPSC topper of 2020, tied the knot with Priyangi Mehta, the 68th BPSC topper and a subsequent UPSC success, in Patna on June 1. This union brings together two remarkable individuals from middle-class backgrounds who rose to the pinnacle of India’s civil services through sheer determination.

Shubham Kumar, originally from Katihar, pursued his education at Vidya Bihar School in Purnia and schools in Patna. After securing the All India Rank 1 in the coveted UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2020, he joined the 2021 batch of IAS officers. He currently serves as the Sub Divisional Magistrate in Barh, Patna district.

A Journey of Perseverance and Success

 

Priyangi Mehta’s journey is equally inspiring. Hailing from a middle-class family in Patna City, she achieved the unprecedented feat of topping the 68th BPSC examination through self-study, without the aid of coaching classes or even mock interviews. While the BPSC top rank was a significant achievement, her ultimate goal remained the UPSC, which she later conquered, securing an impressive All India Rank 261.

Priyangi’s father, Mithilesh Kumar, runs an electronic repair shop, and her mother is a homemaker. Her grandfather, Rajeshwar Prasad, retired as a clerk from the revenue department in the secretariat. After her BPSC success, Priyangi was initially positioned to become a revenue officer.

Her academic path saw her complete her 10th grade from Satyam International School and her intermediate (12th) from the Bihar Board, followed by her 12th from Arvind Mahila College in Arts (Humanities), where she passed in the second division. She then pursued her graduation in Political Science from the esteemed Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

The marriage of Shubham and Priyangi is being celebrated not just as a personal milestone, but as a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication, inspiring countless aspirants across the state and beyond.
