Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Calls for Strict Enforcement of Prohibition

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday chaired a high-level review meeting on prohibition and law and order in Patna, issuing firm directives to ensure strict enforcement of liquor laws and enhanced policing.

During the meeting, top officials, including Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar and senior officials from the prohibition, excise, and registration departments, briefed the chief minister on the current law and order situation and the ongoing efforts to strengthen the liquor ban.

CM Nitish instructed the police to remain fully alert and active in crime control, stressing that no laxity in patrolling would be tolerated. With upcoming festivals, he ordered authorities to keep a strict watch on anti-social elements.

Reaffirming his commitment to prohibition, the chief minister directed officials to ensure its effective implementation. He highlighted the economic and social benefits of the ban, stating that families previously burdened by alcohol expenditure are now witnessing financial stability. He also credited the prohibition policy for fostering peace and harmony across society.

CM Nitish emphasised the promotion of Neera (palm sap) as an alternative livelihood for those previously involved in the toddy business. Calling it a nutritious and palatable drink, he urged officials to expand its production, sale, and derivative products to provide sustainable employment opportunities.

Additionally, he instructed departments to intensify awareness campaigns on the harmful effects of alcohol consumption and ensure alternative employment schemes for affected communities.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena, Additional Chief Secretary of Home Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, Secretary to CM Anupam Kumar, Secretary of Prohibition and Excise Vinod Singh Gunjiyal, and ADG (Liquor Prohibition) Sushil Khopade, among other senior officials.
