Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday inaugurated the Government Tibbi Medical College and Hospital, a 200-bed facility being built at a cost of Rs 264 crore within the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital campus.

The project, spread over 10 acres, aims to bolster the Unani system of medicine in the state. Using a remote control, the chief minister unveiled the foundation plaque and was briefed on the master plan, which includes a boys’ hostel, girls’ hostel, postgraduate intern hostel, facilities for the principal and medical superintendent, and other key infrastructure.

After inspecting the site, the chief minister emphasised the need for timely and quality construction. “It is our priority to provide accessible, affordable, and quality health services to every citizen of the state,” he said. “Bihar has always had a strong connection with Unani, and we are working to strengthen this traditional system alongside Ayurvedic and Homeopathic services.”

The decision to build the new facility was made after CM Nitish’s visit to the original campus on November 22, 2021, when he directed officials to find new land due to the dilapidated condition of the existing building. Ten acres were subsequently allocated next to the existing Nalanda Medical College.

The upgraded facility will include a 500-seat auditorium, a boys’ hostel for 400 students, a girls’ hostel for 350, a medicine manufacturing unit, and accommodation for faculty and staff. The college will enroll 150 students per year. All new structures will be equipped with earthquake-resistant technology, solar lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and air conditioning. The project is expected to be completed within 30 months.

Highlighting the global relevance of Unani medicine, CM Nitish said the system treats the body, mind, and soul holistically, focusing on preventive care through diet, lifestyle, naturopathy, and traditional Hakimi remedies.

Present at the inauguration were Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav, Health Minister Mangal Pandey, Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Patna Mayor Sita Sahu, and senior government officials including the development commissioner, district magistrate, and health department representatives.
