Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ambitious plan to create government jobs and employment opportunities for one crore young people in the state over the next five years, doubling his previous target set under his flagship development programme.

In a post on social media platform X on Sunday, CM Nitish said his government aimed to generate both government positions and private sector jobs between 2025 and 2030 as part of a renewed drive to boost employment in the state. The announcement comes amid a flurry of government declarations in the run-up to the assembly elections.

“It has been our belief from the beginning that the maximum number of youth in the state should get government jobs and employment,” Nitish wrote. “Between 2005 and 2020, more than eight lakh youth were given government jobs in the state.”

Referring to his government’s development plan, Saat Nischay-2, CM Nitish said that in 2020, his administration set a goal of providing government jobs to 10 lakh youth and employment to 10 lakh others. The target was later revised upward to 12 lakh government jobs and 38 lakh employment opportunities by August 2025.

“I am happy to inform that so far 10 lakh youth have been given government jobs and about 39 lakh people have been given employment in the state, and the target of providing jobs or employment to more than 50 lakh youth will definitely be achieved,” Nitish said.

Looking ahead, the chief minister said that “doubling the target” for the period between 2025 and 2030 meant aiming for jobs and employment for one crore young people. He added that new avenues would be created in the private and industrial sectors, with a high-level committee being formed to oversee the initiative.

CM Nitish also announced plans for a new skill development university, to be named after Bharat Ratna Jananayak Karpuri Thakur, the former chief minister and prominent socialist leader. “Under Saat Nischay, youth are being given skill development training to connect them with self-employment. In the coming years, the programme will be expanded, and a skill university will be established to provide new direction to the youth,” he said.

The latest pledge follows other recent government decisions, including granting 35% reservation for women in government jobs and an increase in pension schemes, as Nitish’s administration seeks to bolster its position ahead of the state polls.
