Bihar DISCOMs Record Rs 17,114 Crore in Revenue, Marking 13% Growth

Patna: Bihar’s power distribution companies have achieved a record-breaking revenue collection of Rs 17,114 crore for the financial year 2024-25, reflecting a 13.27% increase from the previous year. North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL) collected Rs 7,937 crore, while South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) contributed Rs 9,177 crore, setting a new benchmark in the state’s power sector.

Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav credited this milestone to strong consumer participation, progressive government policies, and the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He commended energy department officials, engineers, and staff for enhancing billing efficiency, improving consumer services, and strengthening the grievance redressal system.

Lower Tariffs, Better Services

Energy Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pal emphasized that the improved revenue collection has helped maintain an uninterrupted power supply without imposing additional financial burdens on consumers. The strong financial performance has enabled tariff reductions for the second consecutive year:

  • Rural consumers using over 50 units now pay 54 paise less per unit.
  • Rural smart meter users benefit from a 79 paise reduction per unit.
  • Urban smart prepaid meter users enjoy a 25 paise per unit cut.

Efficiency Gains and Smart Metering

The record revenue collection is attributed to a reduction in Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, timely completion of loss reduction projects under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), and the expansion of smart prepaid meters.

Government departments, including Health, Education, Panchayati Raj, Urban Development, and Public Health Engineering, have also strengthened the financial health of power utilities by making centralized payments.

With better billing efficiency and consumer-centric policies, Bihar’s power sector is on track for sustained growth, ensuring affordable electricity and improved service delivery across the state.
