Patna: The Bihar government has begun the process of handing over selected government medical colleges and hospitals to private companies under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary announced that proposals have been sought from private firms to take over these institutions, aiming to strengthen health infrastructure and improve services across the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day health fair at Gyan Bhawan in Patna on July 11, Samrat said that the government will also provide land to private players for establishing new medical colleges and hospitals under the PPP model. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha and Health Minister Mangal Pandey were also present at the event. Vijay emphasised the need for health awareness programmes in schools, while Mangal stated that Bihar’s health services have significantly improved in the last two decades.
Earlier this year, while presenting the state budget, Samrat had announced the plan to open new government medical colleges on PPP mode across Bihar. The state government aims to ensure that each of Bihar’s 38 districts has at least one medical college and hospital. At present, Bihar has 15 medical colleges, including 3 run by the central government.
The government has already announced the establishment of new medical colleges in Araria, Aurangabad, Banka, Jehanabad, Kaimur, Khagaria and Nawada. Land transfer work is in progress, and construction is expected to commence soon.
