Bihar Government Launches Subsidized Mushroom Farming Scheme to Empower Farmers
Patna: The Bihar government, under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, is promoting mushroom farming as a profitable venture by offering substantial support to cultivators. The government aims to help farmers minimize potential losses by providing financial assistance and guidance.
The Horticulture Directorate of the Agriculture Department has launched a “Mushroom Production in Huts” scheme, which covers 50% of the initial setup costs. The scheme operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with each applicant eligible for support for only one unit.
Eligibility and Application Details
To qualify for the scheme, applicants must have completed training from an authorized institution. Prior training is a mandatory requirement for eligibility. Applications must be submitted online through the Horticulture Directorate’s official website.
The estimated cost for establishing a mushroom farming unit is Rs. 1,79,500, with the government providing a 50% subsidy on this amount. The designated mushroom hut should measure 1500 square feet (50 feet x 30 feet). The blueprint and structural design for the hut are available for download on the Horticulture Directorate’s website.
Mushroom Varieties and Cultivation Steps
Several mushroom varieties can be cultivated successfully, including button mushrooms, crimini mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, and shiitake mushrooms. The basic steps involved in mushroom cultivation are as follows:
- Seed Purchase: Mushroom seeds are known as “spawn.” Spawn can be purchased online or from local seed suppliers.
- Creating a Suitable Environment: Mushrooms require specific environmental conditions for optimal growth: a temperature range of 15-20 degrees Celsius, humidity levels between 70-80%, and low light conditions.
- Substrate Preparation: Suitable substrates for mushroom cultivation include wood chips, seed residue, and other organic materials.
- Spawning and Growth: The spawn is spread on the prepared substrate and kept in a clean and humid environment. Regular watering and maintenance of humidity levels are crucial for mushroom growth.
- Harvesting: Mushrooms should be harvested when they are fully mature. After harvesting, they should be sold or stored promptly to maintain their quality.
