Bihar Government To Build State’s Largest Sports Village In Patna’s Punpun Area Under New Sports Policy

Patna: The government of Bihar has announced the construction of the state’s largest sports village in the Punpun area of Patna, aiming to boost athletic infrastructure and talent development across the region. Spread over 100 acres, the complex will feature Olympic-level facilities including an athletics track, cricket and football grounds, and specialized amenities such as a physiotherapy unit, gym, and residential accommodations for players and coaches.

Part of a broader initiative under Bihar’s new sports policy, the Punpun project marks the first phase of a multi-city rollout, with similar sports villages planned in seven other cities: Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnia, Saharsa, Gaya, Munger, and Bhagalpur. Tenders have already been issued for the Saharsa and Purnia sites, where construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

In Muzaffarpur, land at the local engineering college has been designated for the project, while in Bhagalpur, the proposed site is on Tilka Manjhi University premises. Land transfer processes are underway in Darbhanga, with site identification ongoing in Gaya, Munger, and Chhapra. The Chhapra site has been deemed unsuitable, prompting the district administration to seek a new location.

The initiative underscores the state government’s intent to nurture national and international-level athletes from Bihar by providing world-class infrastructure. Officials say the building construction department will tailor each village’s design to meet sport-specific requirements, with comprehensive facilities including courts for volleyball, badminton, basketball, kabaddi, and kho-kho, as well as cafeterias and first-aid centers.
