Bihar Launches Home Stay Scheme to Boost Rural Tourism
Patna: In a significant boost for Bihar’s tourism sector, the state government has unveiled a new Home Stay Scheme aimed at enhancing accommodation options for visitors. Approved by the state cabinet, the initiative will see the development of 1,000 beds in its initial phase. The scheme is designed to offer tourists a unique experience by staying in rural and eco-tourism areas, providing them with an immersive taste of Bihar’s culture, cuisine, and traditions.
To participate, landlords or promoters must register their rooms and beds with the tourism department. This registration will be valid for two years, with an annual renewal thereafter. A non-refundable fee of ₹5,000 will apply for the initial registration. The scheme permits accommodations ranging from one to six rooms and two to twelve beds, targeting both urban and rural locations.
Tourism Minister Nitish Mishra highlighted that the primary goal is to offer affordable lodging while simultaneously creating new employment opportunities within the tourism sector. By connecting visitors with local culture, the scheme promises to enrich their travel experience and support the region’s economic development.
Additionally, the scheme provides financial incentives for participants. Landlords within five kilometers of urban tourist spots and ten kilometers of rural or eco-tourism areas are eligible for support. This includes bank loans up to Rs. 2.50 lakh per room for upgrading facilities, with the interest covered by the Tourism Department. Beneficiaries will also receive training to enhance their skills and service quality.
Tourism Secretary Abhay Kumar Singh emphasised that the scheme’s launch marks a significant step in bolstering Bihar’s tourism infrastructure and fostering local engagement.
