Muzaffarpur: A 65-year-old man died after falling from a third-floor toilet window at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, sparking questions over the hospital’s security arrangements.
The deceased, Devendra Thakur, a resident of Bakhri village under Ahiyapur police station, was admitted to bed number 24 of ward nine and had been receiving treatment for kidney failure for the past week. Medical staff confirmed that both of Thakur’s kidneys had failed and he was suffering from severe swelling due to infection.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon when Thakur allegedly went to use the toilet twice within a short period. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise and found him lying on the ground outside. Despite being rushed to the emergency ward, he was declared dead on arrival.
Hospital authorities said Thakur appeared to have fallen from the toilet window under suspicious circumstances. The family declined a post-mortem, and the body was released for cremation following a written application to police by the hospital’s Medical OP.
Sarwari Khatoon, the in-charge of the Medical OP, confirmed the family’s decision and noted that Thakur’s medical condition had been critical. She also acknowledged the need for a thorough investigation into the fall.
The incident has raised serious concerns over patient safety and hospital security. It remains unclear how a critically ill patient was able to access and fall from a window unsupervised. An internal inquiry has been launched by the hospital administration.
