Patna: The southwest monsoon is expected to bring normal or slightly above normal rainfall to Bihar this year, according to a long-range forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Patna.
Senior meteorologist Anand Shankar said rainfall during the monsoon season, spanning June to September, is likely to be around 90–104% of the state’s long-term average. Bihar typically records an average monsoon rainfall of 992.2 mm. The monsoon is projected to become active in the state around June 20.
Favourable La Niña conditions have developed, significantly reducing the chances of below-normal rainfall, the IMD stated. However, some districts in the central-east, north-east, and south-east regions may receive less than average rainfall. The forecast remains uncertain for parts of north Bihar, where no specific projection has been made yet.
In the short term, a fresh spell of rain is set to continue across Bihar over the next 48 hours. On April 17, eastern parts of the state may witness thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching up to 60 km/h. Rain and thunder are also expected in the western and central regions. By April 18, rain is likely in the northern belt, particularly the Terai region, with the possibility of thunderstorms. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for several areas on both days.
