Bihar Police Intensifies Crackdown as CM Nitish Kumar Declares Zero Tolerance for Crime

Patna: A state-wide crackdown on crime is reshaping Bihar’s law enforcement landscape, with police stepping up operations against criminals, extremists, and organized syndicates. In a series of encounters and arrests over the past few months, the government has sent a clear message—there is no room for lawlessness in Bihar.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has made crime control a priority, directing the police to take strict action against offenders. The response has been swift. In January alone, the Special Task Force (STF) gunned down two notorious criminals, each carrying a bounty of Rs 50,000. Eight Naxalites have been arrested, while a broader crackdown has seen 227 criminals, including 29 with rewards on their heads, taken into custody.
The state’s top brass insists that no offender will be spared. “The law will take its course, no matter how influential the criminal,” a senior police official said.
Encounters and Arrests on the Rise
Over the past three months, four police encounters have taken place across Bihar, including in Patna, targeting criminals and dismantling their networks. The crackdown is also intensifying in districts such as Araria, Munger, Gaya, and Bhojpur, where police units are launching operations as soon as they track suspects’ locations.
A coordinated effort involving the STF, Special Operations Group (SOG), and district police has put organized criminals and Naxalite groups on the defensive. Special investigation units such as Cheetah Force and SIG (Special Investigation Groups) have played a crucial role in the crackdown. The message from law enforcement is clear—Bihar is no longer a safe haven for criminals.
Tightening the Noose on Naxal Activity

Bihar’s battle against Naxalism has also gained momentum, with Maoist activity now largely confined to Kharagpur and Chhakbarbandha. Officials believe the insurgency can be stamped out within three months. Joint operations with Jharkhand police are underway to dismantle remaining extremist networks along the state border.
The STF has also set up 15 Special Operations Groups (SOGs) to crack down on organized crime. In recent months, hundreds of arrests have been made in cases linked to ransom gangs, arms smuggling, and financial crimes. The state’s digital crime database, which tracks criminal activity in real-time, is proving to be a game-changer.
Tracking Bihar’s Most-Wanted Criminals
A dynamic Top-10 and Top-20 criminal watchlist is being updated regularly, ensuring that notorious offenders, whether behind bars or operating from outside the state, remain under surveillance. Authorities are also targeting individuals and networks that provide shelter and resources to fugitives.
The government is now preparing to introduce a stricter policy to curb the illegal arms trade and regulate the sale of ammunition, aiming to prevent criminals from accessing weapons.
A Zero-Tolerance Approach to Crime

With police forces given a free hand and access to advanced digital surveillance, data analytics, and real-time intelligence, law enforcement has ramped up its operations against crime syndicates. A senior officer described it as “not just an immediate response, but part of a long-term strategy” to make Bihar safer.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has underscored that good governance cannot be compromised. “No hurdle will be tolerated in maintaining law and order,” he said. Police intelligence units and technical teams are now conducting targeted raids, ensuring criminals have nowhere to hide.
For Bihar’s residents, the intensified police action is a sign of changing times—where fear is being replaced by security and governance is reclaiming lost ground. “This isn’t just about fighting crime,” an official remarked. “It’s about reclaiming Bihar’s rule of law.”
