Bihar Steps Up Green Push With Tough Pollution Measures and Eco- Tourism Campaigns

Patna: In a bid to combat pollution and promote environmental sustainability, the Bihar government has launched a series of initiatives ranging from air quality monitoring and stricter regulation of brick kilns to reforestation drives and the promotion of eco-tourism.

Tackling Air Pollution With Real-Time Monitoring

Air quality monitoring systems have been installed at 35 locations across 23 districts, enabling continuous assessment of pollution levels. Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Gaya—identified as the most polluted districts by a central government report—are under special focus. The Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has drawn up a detailed action plan to address the issue.

Modernising Brick Kilns With Cleaner Technology

To curb emissions from brick kilns, the state has mandated the adoption of zig-zag technology in 99% of kilns. Environment Minister Dr Sunil Kumar confirmed that licenses will not be issued to kilns that fail to comply. In addition, vehicles are subject to biannual inspections to ensure they meet pollution control standards. These efforts have reportedly led to a measurable reduction in winter air pollution over the past three years.

Eco Hour: One Hour for the Planet, Every Week

With the aim of increasing green cover from 15.05% to 17% by 2028, the government has launched a weekly campaign titled “Every Sunday Eco-Friendly Work: One Hour for the Environment.” Citizens are encouraged to dedicate an hour each week to environmental activities. Forest officials have been instructed to plant trees and post photographic proof on social media, with non-compliance resulting in disciplinary action.

Water Conservation Through ‘Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali’ Mission

The state’s water conservation programme includes desilting ponds, planting trees around water bodies, and promoting rainwater harvesting. The initiative draws on the interconnectedness of water and vegetation. “Planting more trees can help avert a water crisis,” said Dr Kumar, stressing the ecological logic behind the green push.

Eco-Tourism and the Cultural Economy

To further boost eco-tourism, the state government is encouraging filmmakers and web series creators to shoot in Bihar. Under new guidelines, production crews must display the shooting location and acknowledge the Bihar government in their credits.

Rajgir and Bodh Gaya have emerged as top destinations, now attracting more foreign tourists than Goa, according to state officials. With an emphasis on sustainable tourism and the preservation of natural heritage, the state is positioning itself as a global destination for eco-conscious travellers.
