Bhagalpur: Fishing has been completely banned in Bhagalpur’s rivers and notified free water zones from June 15 to August 15 in a move aimed at conserving aquatic biodiversity. The restriction aligns with the fish breeding season, and the Forest Department has warned that anyone found violating the ban could face imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of up to Rs 500, or both, under Section 13 of the Bihar Water Tax Management Act, 2006.
District Fisheries Officer Krishna Kanhaiya stated that the measure is essential to allow fish populations to reproduce and thrive. Police stations across the district have been informed and asked to ensure strict enforcement of the order.
However, the decision has sparked concern among the local fishing community, who rely on fishing as their primary source of income. “The government is stopping us from fishing, but not offering any alternative support,” said Bipin, a local fisherman. He urged authorities to provide compensation or temporary employment to support families affected by the seasonal ban.
Fishermen continue to sell fish at various locations in the city, but many fear the financial strain will deepen unless the administration intervenes with assistance measures.
