Bihar: Weavers in Bhagalpur Gear Up for Election Season, Fulfilling Orders Worth Crores for Political Gamchas
BHAGALPUR – As Bihar gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, weavers in Bhagalpur are witnessing a surge in demand for Bhagalpuri saffron and green Gamchas or Gamchhas, marking a significant development in the political landscape of the state. With the elections stirring a frenzy of seat distribution negotiations among political parties, the weavers of Bhagalpur find themselves at the forefront, catering to the burgeoning demand for political merchandise.
Notably, the distinct colors of Bhagalpuri Gamchas symbolize the affiliations of various political parties, with saffron representing the BJP and green representing both JDU and RJD. This unique fusion of politics and craftsmanship has injected vibrancy into the local market, as political fervor intensifies in the run-up to the elections.
Weavers in Champanagar, Bhagalpur have received a staggering demand of over four crore gamchas from 14 districts across Bihar and other states. The orders, which must be fulfilled by April 15, have propelled weavers into a frenzy of activity as they work tirelessly to meet the burgeoning demand.
Prabhas Kumar, a weaver, revealed that orders for 30,000 pieces of gamchas, incorporating both saffron and green colors, have been received. Additionally, demand for yellow-colored Gamchas has also surged, indicating the extensive reach of Bhagalpuri craftsmanship in the political arena.
Handloom businessman Sanjeev Kumar disclosed that demand for saffron and green gamchas, along with yellow pots, has surged, with orders pouring in from various districts of Bihar, as well as neighboring states like Jharkhand.
The scale of demand is staggering, with orders ranging from 25,000 to 10,000 pieces of gamchas, necessitating the mobilization of all available resources to meet the deadlines. Deliveries are slated for April 7 and April 15, catering to the diverse requirements of political workers and leaders.
The reach of Bhagalpuri gamchas extends beyond Bihar, with demands pouring in from regions like Seemanchal and Jharkhand, highlighting the widespread popularity of these political accessories.
Another weaver emphasized the extensive reach of Bhagalpuri gamchas, with orders pouring in from districts like Patna, Supaul, Saharsa, Araria, Kishanganj, Rohtas, and Gaya, among others. The demand underscores the pivotal role of Bhagalpuri craftsmanship in shaping the visual narrative of political affiliations.
Despite facing challenges such as adverse weather conditions, weavers remain committed to delivering high-quality gamchas, which undergo meticulous preparation involving dyeing and sun-drying processes.
