Bihar’s Block Transport Scheme: 3,600 Buses to Improve Connectivity and Create Jobs
Patna: The Bihar government has launched a transformative initiative to bolster transport connectivity across the state under the Chief Minister Block Transport Scheme. A subsidy-backed program will support the purchase of 3,600 buses, improving public transport in 496 blocks while creating employment opportunities.
The scheme was formally inaugurated on Wednesday in Vishvesvaraya Bhavan Auditorium, with the Transport Department collaborating with the State Bank of India to roll out approved loan distributions. The event was marked by the distribution of bus keys and acceptance letters to five initial beneficiaries by Transport Minister Sheela Kumari.
Enhancing Connectivity and Employment
Speaking at the launch, minister Kumari emphasized that the scheme, introduced in November 2023, aims to connect block-level areas to district headquarters and other key destinations across Bihar. Up to seven beneficiaries per block will receive subsidies for bus purchases, a move expected to generate direct employment for 7,200 individuals and benefit numerous families indirectly.
“This initiative ensures not just connectivity but also employment opportunities, marking a major step towards the state’s development,” the Minister said.
Improving Safety and Infrastructure
Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal highlighted that the scheme fulfils Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s vision of linking every village to district headquarters and districts to the state capital. By enhancing organized bus services, the program also aims to reduce highway accidents, providing safer travel options for residents.
“This is not just a bus—it is a vehicle of development. Seamless connectivity between villages, districts, and cities will drive Bihar’s growth,” Agarwal added.
Financial Support and Targeted Inclusion
Under the scheme, a grant of Rs. 5 lakh per bus will be provided to beneficiaries. In blocks with significant Scheduled Tribe populations, additional beneficiaries from the Scheduled Tribe category will be included. The state government’s commitment to inclusivity ensures the scheme’s reach extends to the most marginalized communities.
Streamlined Implementation
State Bank of India’s General Manager (South Network), Ravindra Kumar Srivastava, pledged the bank’s support for the initiative, underscoring the appointment of nodal officers in every district to ensure beneficiaries face no hurdles during the process.
The event was attended by senior officials from the Transport Department, including Additional Secretary Praveen Kumar and Deputy Secretary Aruna Kumari, alongside other dignitaries.
The Chief Minister Block Transport Scheme is poised to significantly improve public transport, promote safety, and stimulate economic development across Bihar, reaffirming the state’s commitment to inclusive growth.
