Sitamarhi: The Riga Sugar Mill in Sitamarhi, which has been shut since the 2020-21 crushing season, is set to reopen on December 20, 2024. The mill’s revival follows a resolution by the Kolkata Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), which declared Nirani Sugars Ltd. as the successful investor. The company has already deposited the full tender amount, paving the way for the plant’s operations to restart.
Revival Work Underway
Currently, around 400 workers are engaged in repair and maintenance activities at the mill in preparation for the upcoming crushing season. The restored facility is expected to process 15–20 lakh quintals of sugarcane during the 2024-25 season, generating payments of approximately Rs. 80 crore to sugarcane farmers. This will directly benefit between 5,000 and 7,000 farmers in the region.
Long-Term Economic Impact
Looking ahead, the mill’s operation is expected to have a transformative impact on the local economy. During the 2025-26 crushing season and subsequent years, an estimated 30,000–35,000 sugarcane farmers across Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur districts will benefit from the resumed production. The mill’s revival is anticipated to bring significant economic growth and prosperity to these areas.
The reopening of the Riga Sugar Mill marks a crucial milestone in bolstering the sugarcane industry in Bihar, offering much-needed support to farmers and contributing to the region’s development.
