Patna: Children and youth in Bihar are immersing themselves in the rich heritage of the region’s folk songs through a unique theatre music workshop hosted by Imagination Sanstha, with support from the Department of Art, Culture and Youth, Government of Bihar. Following the success of its first phase focused on Hindustani folk music, the second phase aims to instill a deep appreciation for Bihar’s vibrant folk heritage.
The workshop features three sessions, each designed to enhance participants’ understanding of rhythm and movement. Renowned theatre artist and National School of Drama alumnus, Vinod Rai, leads the first session, where participants explore the intricate relationship between rhythm and physical expression. The second session, guided by folk culture expert Mohammad Jani, introduces attendees to the works of Bhikhari Thakur, revered as the Shakespeare of Bhojpuri. This segment highlights the significance of folk narratives in Bihar’s cultural landscape.
In a creative culmination, trainers Aparajita and Janvi Soni engage children from local slums in theatre games and classical dance, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Approximately 40-50 participants from various states and districts, alongside 25-30 children from underprivileged backgrounds, are actively involved in this enriching experience.
Kundan Kumar, secretary of Imagination Sanstha, expressed enthusiasm about the workshop, stating, “This is the first national-level theatre music workshop in Bihar. We are grateful for the support from the Department of Art, Culture and Youth.” The workshop will conclude with a vibrant presentation on August 10-11, featuring Rang Sangeet, Katha Gayan, and the musical theatre piece Rashmirathi, promising to showcase the extraordinary talent blossoming in Bihar.
