Bhagalpur: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has kicked off its Waqf Reform Janjagran Abhiyan, a nationwide outreach programme aimed at raising awareness about the recent amendments to the Waqf Act, with its inaugural event held in Bhagalpur, Bihar. Titled Shukriya Modi Bhaijaan, the programme drew significant participation from the Muslim community.
BJP Bihar state president Dr Dilip Jaiswal and national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain addressed the gathering, highlighting the perceived benefits of the amended legislation for underprivileged members of the Muslim community. The leaders praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what they called a “historic and necessary” reform in the interest of transparency and inclusivity.
“This law will ensure that Waqf properties benefit the poor, orphans and widows, rather than being misused by a select few,” said Hussain, assuring that religious sites such as dargahs, mosques and graveyards would remain under Muslim management, with non-Muslims involved only in administrative roles where necessary.
Jaiswal urged the Muslim community to understand and support the new law, stating it is designed to protect the community’s interests and curb exploitation. “The poor Muslims of Bihar and the nation must realise the good that this amendment brings,” he said, adding that the BJP stands firmly with minorities and encourages their participation in party activities.
Both leaders criticised opposition parties for allegedly spreading misinformation and inciting fear regarding the reforms. “Those making noise are worried about losing control over illegally occupied Waqf assets,” said Hussain.
The Bhagalpur event was chaired by BJP district president Santosh Kumar Sah and attended by several minority leaders from the party, including Bihar State Minority Front president Mohd Qamaruzzama Ansari and others from the Bhagalpur unit. Hussain also announced that similar events will be organised across Bihar, culminating in a large-scale programme in Patna.
