CBI Arrests Income Tax Deputy Commissioner, Associate in Patna in Bribery Case Linked to Faceless Assessment Scheme

Patna: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested Income Tax Department Deputy Commissioner Vijendra and his associate Dinesh Kumar Agarwal, a West Champaran resident and former independent Lok Sabha candidate from Valmikinagar, for allegedly subverting the faceless income tax assessment scheme.

The arrests come in connection with a broader investigation launched by the CBI following a complaint from the Income Tax Department. The probe had earlier led to raids across multiple locations, including Delhi, Mumbai, Thane, West Champaran, Bengaluru, and Kerala, on February 6, 2025. During these searches, officials seized objectionable documents, digital evidence, and proof of bribery.

The CBI has registered a case against the Deputy Commissioner, two Income Tax inspectors, five chartered accountants, a private individual, and several unidentified persons. The charges include criminal conspiracy and corruption for manipulating tax assessments in exchange for bribes, thereby undermining the integrity of the faceless scheme introduced to ensure transparency in tax administration.
