Patna: Three young men drowned in the Ganga River while bathing at the Collectorate Ghat in the Gandhi Maidan police station area of Patna on Friday evening. All three were close friends and died in the tragic attempt to save one another.
The deceased have been identified as Vinit Kumar (20), a resident of Mandiri; Sonu Raj (19), from Ganga Colony, Digha Ghat; and Aditya Kumar (19), of Dujra Buddha Colony. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over their respective localities.
SDRF and Police Recovered the Bodies After Hours of Effort
According to police, the incident occurred around late evening when the trio went to bathe in the river. As soon as information was received, teams from the Gandhi Maidan police station and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the spot. After several hours of search and rescue efforts, all three bodies were recovered and taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Drowned While Trying to Save Each Other
Eyewitnesses reported that the three friends had been chatting near the ghat for some time before entering the water. Vinit is believed to have unknowingly stepped into a deeper section of the river and started to drown. In a desperate attempt to save him, Sonu and Aditya also went in after him but were quickly overpowered by the current. All three were swept under in moments.
Bystanders attempted to help but were unable to save the youths. The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns about the lack of safety measures and warning signs at bathing points along the riverbank.
Families and Locals in Shock
The families of the deceased were informed late Friday night. Local residents expressed grief and called for better monitoring of such ghats, especially during the summer season when river bathing increases.
Authorities are expected to review safety arrangements at the Collectorate Ghat and other vulnerable spots along the Ganga in the coming days.
