Bihar’s Green Initiative: Nagar Van and Nagar Vatika Scheme Reviewed by Environment Minister

Patna: A review meeting on migratory birds was held in Patna under the chairmanship of Dr Prem Kumar, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bihar. The meeting discussed the arrival of migratory birds in the state and the department’s ongoing conservation efforts.

World Migratory Bird Day is observed globally on May 9 to raise awareness about the ecological importance of these birds and their conservation. The Bihar government organizes various programs, including bird festivals and awareness campaigns, to ensure the safe arrival of migratory birds.

During the winter season, Bihar welcomes migratory birds from over 30 countries. The state’s wetlands, particularly in North Bihar, provide ideal habitats for these birds, with 274 bird species having been recorded.

The state has initiated bird counting efforts since 2022. Notable migratory birds observed in Bihar include the Greater Adjutant Stork, Greater Flamingo, Common Sandpiper, Ibis, and Little Ringed Plover. Kanwar Lake in Begusarai district, recognized as Asia’s largest freshwater oxbow lake, is a significant destination for these birds.

The Minister emphasised the state’s commitment to bird conservation, highlighting the establishment of the Garuda Rescue and Rehabilitation Center and the Bird Ringing and Monitoring Station in Bhagalpur.

The government is actively working to develop bird sanctuaries and promote eco-tourism while also creating employment opportunities in these areas.

The Minister directed departmental officials to implement all necessary measures to protect the birds, including preventing hunting activities. A phased plan will be developed to address the specific needs of different bird species and their arrival locations. A dedicated team will be formed to apprehend hunters.
