Banka/Patna: In a bold move to clamp down on habitual traffic offenders, authorities in Bihar’s Banka district have begun recommending the cancellation of driving licences after three repeated violations. The initiative, aimed at improving road safety and ensuring stricter enforcement, has already led to the cancellation of one driver’s licence. The system is powered by a shift from manual to e-challan technology, which has significantly increased the efficiency and transparency of traffic law enforcement.
The traffic police are now closely monitoring repeat offenders using handheld devices linked to a central database. These devices allow officers to instantly access a vehicle’s registration details and verify whether a driving licence is genuine or fake. According to Traffic DSP Neeraj Kumar, one motorcyclist was caught flouting traffic rules three times. Following the violations, a formal proposal was sent to the District Transport Officer (DTO) to cancel the individual’s licence, marking the first such case in the region.
Helmet compliance is another area under strict scrutiny. The traffic police have warned that both riders and pillion passengers on two-wheelers must wear helmets. If either is found without one, a fine will be issued on the spot. Special drives are underway across the district, with daily checks being conducted at major intersections and public squares to enforce the rules and raise awareness.
The crackdown also targets those using fake driving licences. With the e-challan system, fake licence holders can be identified almost instantly when their details are entered into the device. This technological shift, implemented nearly a year ago, has empowered local police and transport officials to act more swiftly and decisively against violators.
