Patna: Officials and employees of the Department of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change pledged their commitment to eradicating child marriage in India. The oath-taking ceremony was held as part of the “Child Marriage-Free India” campaign launched on November 27, 2024, to address the persistent challenge of child marriage in the country.

The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, effective from November 1, 2007, prohibits the marriage of girls below 18 years and boys below 21 years. The Act provides a legal framework to combat child marriage and promote awareness across the nation.

The ceremony was attended by Joint Secretary Poonam Kumari, Joint Secretary Chittaranjan Sharma, Internal Financial Advisor Manish Kumar, and other departmental officials. They stressed the importance of collective efforts in enforcing the law and ensuring a future free of child marriage.

This initiative underscores the government’s and its institutions’ commitment to raising awareness and intensifying enforcement against this deep-rooted social issue. The department’s active participation highlights its dedication to fostering a just and equitable society.
