GI Facilitation Centre Inaugurated at Bihar Agricultural University to Boost Local Agricultural Products

Sabour: A Geographical Indication (GI) Facilitation Centre was inaugurated at Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, on Tuesday by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. D.R. Singh, and Binay Kumar Sinha, Chief General Manager of NABARD, Patna. The centre, established at a cost of Rs 36 lakh, aims to enhance global recognition for Bihar’s indigenous agricultural products.
The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of senior officials, scientists, professors, and students from various departments. The centre will expedite the GI tagging process, increase awareness and usage of GI-certified products, and strengthen the branding of Bihar’s agricultural goods in global markets.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Singh said, “This GI Facilitation Centre will not only provide recognition and protection for Bihar’s traditional agricultural products but will also help farmers secure fair prices and expand their reach to national and international markets.” He described the facility as a key hub for research and certification of Bihar’s unique produce.
Sinha emphasized NABARD’s support, stating, “The GI Facilitation Centre will provide international recognition to Bihar’s special agricultural products, boosting farmers’ income and strengthening the state’s economy.”
Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, BAU’s Director of Research, called the initiative a milestone in agricultural innovation. He highlighted the centre’s role in securing GI tags for products such as Makhana, Katarni rice, Shahi litchi, Bhagalpuri silk, and black turmeric. He added that the facility would help develop branding and marketing strategies to expand the global reach of Bihar’s agricultural products.
