Patna: The Department of Sociology at Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), in collaboration with the Department of History and the Gender Cell “WE,” organized a guest lecture on the topic “Transgender Persons: Their Identity and Social Acceptance.”

The event featured Reshma Prasad, a transgender activist, founding member of DOSTANASAFAR, and senate member of Patna University, as the keynote speaker.

The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Tapashi Bhattacharjee, Head of the Sociology Department. Following this, Reshma Prasad delivered an insightful and engaging presentation, effectively distinguishing between the concepts of sexuality and gender. Her interactive approach resonated with students, incorporating games to foster participation and discussion.

Prasad shed light on the historical context of transgender issues, elaborating on the legal milestones that have influenced the present understanding of transgender rights in India. The interactive games enabled students to engage in thoughtful dialogue, providing a platform to share their perspectives on the social acceptance of transgender individuals.

A Q&A session followed, where students posed questions to Reshma Prasad. She offered thoughtful and nuanced responses, encouraging students to continue exploring the complexities of gender and sexuality while promoting a deeper understanding of transgender identities within society.

The event concluded with group photography, symbolizing the inclusiveness and support for the transgender community. The atmosphere of the session reflected a shared commitment to raising awareness and fostering acceptance.

The lecture was held under the guidance of Dr. Tapashi Bhattacharjee, along with Dr. Sister Celine Crasta A.C., Head of the Department of History, and Ms. Puja, coordinator of the WE PWC Gender Cell. The program was moderated by Payal Kumari Ojha, a student from the Sociology Department, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Sukanya Navneet, also a Sociology student.
