Heavy Rains Predicted in Bihar: Orange Alert in 12 Districts, Storms Wreak Havoc in Saharsa and Aurangabad

Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 12 districts in Bihar, forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by wind speeds of 50 to 60 km/h on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for 17 other districts, where light to moderate showers with gusty winds are expected.
While Patna is likely to remain cloudy, the weather department has hinted at partial relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions. However, districts outside the alert zones may continue to battle humid and uncomfortable weather, meteorologists warned.
Storm Damage Reported from Saharsa, Aurangabad
The impact of pre-monsoon weather disturbances is already being felt across the state. On Tuesday, heavy rain led to waterlogging in several areas of Aurangabad, including inside the CT scan unit of Sadar Hospital, disrupting services and raising concerns about hospital infrastructure.
In Saharsa district’s Banwa village (Banma Ithari block), a violent storm late Monday night caused widespread damage. Thatched roofs and tin sheds of homes in Ward No. 12 were torn off, and more than six houses collapsed, leaving families in distress. The sudden storm uprooted trees and left behind debris, creating hurdles for villagers and local authorities alike.
Humidity, Heat Continue to Trouble Residents
Explaining the current weather pattern, experts said the situation has emerged due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and the delayed advancement of the southwest monsoon.
“Moist winds from the Bay of Bengal are pushing into Bihar, raising humidity levels. This is causing patchy rainfall in some areas and uncomfortable conditions in others,” a senior IMD official told Punekar News.
While some districts are experiencing short spells of relief due to isolated showers, most areas are grappling with sticky heat, especially during the night. The IMD suggests this pattern may persist until the monsoon becomes fully active over the state.
Forecast Summary:
- Orange Alert: 12 districts – Heavy rainfall and strong winds.
- Yellow Alert: 17 districts – Light to moderate rain, gusty winds.
- Patna: Cloudy skies; marginal relief from heat.
- Rest of Bihar: Humid and hot conditions continue.
