IIM Bodh Gaya Trains Bihar DSP Probationers in Leadership and Ethical Policing

Bodh Gaya: IIM Bodh Gaya conducted a two-phase Management Development Programme (MDP) for 38 Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) probationers from the Bihar Police Academy between April 1 and April 12. The officers, recently selected through the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), were trained in key managerial, behavioural and leadership skills aimed at enhancing their readiness for modern policing challenges.

The programme, designed to align with the evolving demands of law enforcement, was led under the guidance of IIM Bodh Gaya Director, Dr Vinita S Sahai. Addressing the participants, Dr Sahai underscored the role of DSPs in sustaining law and order and fostering public trust. She stressed the growing significance of ethical decision-making, inter-departmental coordination and timely leadership in effective administration.

Organised under the supervision of Dr Amit Srivastava, Chairperson, Executive Education and Consultancy, and coordinated by Dr Vishal Ashok Wankhede and Prof Sajan Pookkodan, the MDP combined classroom learning, assessments and field exposure. Topics covered included goal setting, crisis communication, use of data, social media strategy and leadership in high-pressure situations.

The first phase (April 1–5), held at IIM Bodh Gaya’s campus, featured sessions on time management, human behaviour and media communication. Officers also visited Vishnupad and Mahabodhi temples, reflecting on how heritage sites could foster empathy and ethical leadership.

The second phase (April 7–12), hosted at Bihar Police Academy in Rajgir, focused on ethics in public service, budgeting, citizen-centric service delivery and stakeholder engagement. The programme concluded with prototyping and brainstorming exercises on public service innovation.

Senior officers of the Bihar Police Academy, including IPS officer and Assistant Director Sushil Kumar, attended the inaugural session. Kumar highlighted the need for structured, forward-looking training to build a responsive and community-oriented police force in Bihar.

This MDP was one of 125 programmes conducted by IIM Bodh Gaya in the current academic year. So far, the institute has trained over 8,200 officers from diverse departments, including the Water Resources Department, BIPARD, Bihar Fire Training Academy, State Health Society, IOCL, HPCL and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

The initiative reflects IIM Bodh Gaya’s growing role in shaping future-ready public leadership across India’s administrative and policing sectors.
