Patna: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna on Monday inaugurated the IEEE International Symposium on 6G Mobile Wireless Communication, a two-day conference designed to foster global collaboration in the rapidly advancing field of wireless technologies.
Organised by the Department of Electrical Engineering, the symposium brings together more than 200 delegates, including scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders, to explore the transformative potential of sixth-generation mobile networks. Held on the institute’s campus from June 2 to 3, the event features keynote speeches, technical presentations, and hands-on sessions on topics ranging from terahertz (THz) communication and artificial intelligence to integrated space-terrestrial networks.
The symposium was inaugurated by Prof T. N. Singh, Director of IIT Patna, who underscored the institute’s growing leadership in wireless research. He highlighted IIT Patna’s cutting-edge contributions to intelligent surface design and antenna technologies, areas crucial for the development of 6G systems tailored for defence and space applications.
Babu Ram, Additional Director General (Telecom), Department of Telecommunications (DoT), stressed the strategic importance of 6G for India’s digital future, while Dr Parag Agrawal, Deputy Director General (TTDF), reaffirmed the Centre’s support for indigenous innovation in this domain.
Dr Amit Kumar Singh, Convener of the symposium and head of the 6G research group at IIT Patna, said the next generation of wireless communication would enable “ultra-fast connectivity, intelligent sensing, autonomous systems, remote healthcare and deeply integrated space-air-ground networks.” He noted that the symposium aims to bridge the gap between theoretical advances and real-world applications in 6G.
Key sessions of the conference include emerging technologies like Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS), Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM), and AI/ML in wireless optimisation. A highlight of the symposium is a dedicated technical workshop for early-career researchers and doctoral students.
The event is backed by major institutional partners, including IEEE, Bharat 6G Alliance, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), the Ministry of Communications, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It will conclude on June 3 with a special address by Niraj Verma, Additional Secretary and Administrator of the Digital Bharat Nidhi.
