IIT Patna’s Convocation Highlights Growth, Innovation, and Future Expansion Plans

Patna: IIT Patna’s 11th Convocation, held on Saturday, was not just a celebration of academic achievements but also a testament to the institute’s growing stature in India’s higher education landscape. With 713 graduates receiving degrees, the event was a milestone moment for students and faculty alike.
Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, the chief guest, commended IIT Patna’s rapid progress and called upon graduates to embrace innovation and resilience. Bihar’s education minister, Sunil Kumar, emphasized the role of perseverance and values in shaping future leaders.
IIT Patna’s Rising Global Recognition
During the convocation, Prof. T. N. Singh, Director of IIT Patna, highlighted the institute’s improved rankings in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025, where it moved up to the 601-800 bracket from its earlier 801-1000 position. He also noted IIT Patna’s standing in the India Rankings 2024 by NIRF MoE, where it secured 34th place among engineering institutions and 73rd overall.
Singh elaborated on the institute’s ongoing growth, research advancements, and industry-academia collaborations. He also drew attention to IIT Patna’s mention in the Union Budget 2025, where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the institute’s expansion plans.
Major Infrastructure Expansion on the Horizon
The convocation served as a platform to unveil IIT Patna’s ambitious expansion strategy, which includes the construction of new academic and tutorial blocks, additional boys’ and girls’ hostels, a state-of-the-art Research Park, a hostel for international students, a Central Research Facility, and new residential complexes.
These developments aim to strengthen IIT Patna’s position as a research and innovation hub while catering to the growing student and faculty population.
Chief Guest’s Address: A Call for Innovation
Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary emphasized the importance of critical thinking and skill development in today’s evolving job market. “Your journey from securing a seat at IIT to graduating today is proof of your resilience. Stay strong in the face of challenges, think innovatively, and work towards making India a global leader in technology,” he said.
He also encouraged graduates to explore entrepreneurial ventures and contribute to India’s progress through groundbreaking ideas.
Bihar’s Education Minister on Perseverance and Values
Guest of Honour Sunil Kumar reflected on the improvement in Bihar’s education sector and emphasized the increasing participation of women in higher education. He urged students to uphold values of gratitude, morality, and humility, sharing insights from his time working with former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
“Ups and downs are part of life, but those who persevere always emerge stronger,” he told the graduates.
Recognizing Academic Excellence
The convocation also honored exceptional students with awards for academic distinction and contributions to institute activities. Four Gold Medals, 21 Silver Medals, and 19 Proficiency Prizes were presented to students excelling in their respective fields.
Among the top awardees, Nischal Jain (BTech, Mechanical Engineering) received the President of India Gold Medal, Rohit Kumar (BTech, Computer Science & Engineering) was honored with the Director’s Gold Medal, Ambikesh Dwivedi (MTech, Geotechnical Engineering) earned the Chairman’s Gold Medal, and Binayak Rout (MSc, Physics) was awarded the Aryabhatta Gold Medal.
