Indian Student Arrested in US for Posing as Federal Agent to Scam Elderly Woman

New Delhi: In a shocking case of fraud, a 23-year-old Indian student, Varun Nallure Balaji, has been arrested in the United States for impersonating a federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent and scamming a 78-year-old woman in Massachusetts.

The incident occurred in April when Balaji allegedly approached the woman’s residence claiming she was under investigation for drug trafficking and money laundering.

According to the US Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts, Balaji convinced the victim that her assets were in jeopardy and coerced her into handing over $30,000 in cash as part of a fake federal investigation.

He allegedly threatened her with arrest and imprisonment if she failed to comply.

Balaji was later arrested after federal authorities tracked him through surveillance and coordinated sting operations. He now faces charges of impersonating a federal officer and wire fraud, both of which carry severe penalties, including potential prison time and deportation if convicted.

The Indian Consulate has yet to comment on the situation. The case has drawn significant attention to the risks posed by impersonation scams, particularly those targeting vulnerable elderly citizens in the US. The investigation remains ongoing.
