JD(U) Denies Withdrawal of Support from BJP-Led Manipur Government, Removes State President

Patna: The Janata Dal (United) announced its continued support for the BJP-led government in Manipur, refuting claims made by its Manipur unit president, Viren Singh, about withdrawing support. The JD(U) leadership swiftly removed Biren Singh from his position, citing indiscipline for issuing the statement without consulting the central leadership.

JD(U) national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad clarified that the party remains committed to working with the BJP in Manipur. He stated that the support to the NDA government will continue, emphasizing the party’s focus on serving the people of the state. Singh’s unilateral decision to issue a withdrawal letter was labeled as a violation of party protocol.

In the 2022 Manipur elections, BJP secured 32 out of 60 assembly seats, while six JD(U) candidates won. However, five of these JD(U) MLAs later aligned with the BJP, further strengthening its position. Three independent MLAs also back the BJP government, ensuring its majority in the assembly.

The Congress and RJD reacted sharply to the developments. Congress spokesperson Gyan Ranjan criticized the BJP for its handling of the situation in Manipur, alleging atrocities and calling for the imposition of President’s Rule. Meanwhile, RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed supported Biren Singh’s stance, stating it reflects growing distrust in the BJP and its leadership across the country. He termed the step as bold and indicative of the BJP’s deteriorating political influence.
