Mahabodhi Temple Receives Bomb Threat, Security Tightened

Mahabodhi Temple Gaya

Gaya: The Mahabodhi Temple in Gaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Buddhist pilgrimage destination, has received a bomb threat through a letter. In response, security around the temple has been intensified, and the police have launched an investigation.

The threatening letter, allegedly sent in the name of Jharkhand gangster Prince Khan, has caused widespread concern. Prince Khan, a fugitive with a ₹30 lakh bounty on his head, has been on the run since 2021 after being accused of the murder of land dealer Nanhe Khan. Both Red Corner and Blue Corner notices have been issued against him, and his last known location was traced to Dubai.

Gaya Police, acting swiftly on the threat, visited Prince Khan’s residence in Wasseypur, Dhanbad, on Tuesday (10th December) but failed to locate him. Authorities confirmed that his passport has already been revoked.

District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S.M. stated, “A letter threatening to bomb the Mahabodhi Temple was received four days ago. Preliminary investigations suggest it may be fake, but we are not taking any chances. An FIR has been registered, and the matter is being thoroughly investigated. Security at the temple has been strengthened.”

The police and intelligence agencies are exploring all possible angles while ensuring the safety of devotees and the surrounding areas.

The Mahabodhi Temple has been the target of terrorist attacks in the past. On 7th July 2013, terrorists carried out nine bomb blasts at the temple and nearby pilgrimage sites within 30 minutes, injuring five people, including two monks.

Another attempt to bomb the temple was made on 19th January 2019, when explosives were planted in three locations around the temple premises while the Dalai Lama was visiting. Fortunately, the police’s timely search operation averted a major disaster.

Despite the increased security, devotees continue to gather outside the temple, albeit with heightened caution. The police and temple authorities have urged visitors to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel to ensure their safety.

The Mahabodhi Temple, a sacred site where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment, remains under tight surveillance as investigations continue.
