Patna: Makhana, the aquatic superfood native to Bihar, has been granted a globally recognised Harmonized System (HS) code, marking a significant milestone for producers and exporters in the region. For the first time, Makhana products have been formally categorised for international trade, providing a clear and distinct identity in global markets.
The move is being hailed as a historic achievement for farmers and entrepreneurs, particularly in the Mithilanchal region — encompassing districts such as Darbhanga, Madhubani, Saharsa, Supaul, Purnia, and Katihar — where Makhana cultivation has long been a source of livelihood and cultural pride.
The HS classification system, developed by the World Customs Organization, enables countries to uniformly classify goods for import and export. Makhana has now been segmented into three distinct categories:
- HS Code 20081921 for popped Makhana,
- HS Code 20081922 for Makhana powder or flour,
- HS Code 20081929 for other Makhana-based products.
This classification is expected to streamline customs processes, ensure transparency in taxation, and simplify trade-related documentation. It also opens up greater access to government incentives, export benefits, and inclusion in global supply chains.
By receiving an HS code, Makhana is positioned for easier clearance in overseas markets, improved acceptance under international trade norms, and fair valuation during export and import. For local farmers and processing units, this development is anticipated to boost demand, improve price realisation, and attract investment into value-added products and start-ups.
The development reflects years of advocacy and sustained efforts by stakeholders in the sector, who have sought formal recognition of Makhana’s economic and nutritional value.
