Patna: An 11-year-old rape survivor, brought to Patna from Muzaffarpur with horrific injuries, tragically died during treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday morning. Her death comes after a harrowing nine-hour ordeal on Saturday, during which she reportedly remained in an ambulance outside the hospital, denied timely admission.
The young victim had arrived at PMCH around 11 AM on Saturday. Despite her critical condition, she was allegedly left in agony, waiting for admission. It was only after Congress leaders created a ruckus at the hospital around 8:30 PM that she was finally admitted to the ICU of the Gynecology and Obstetrics department. Doctors from three different departments made desperate attempts to save her life, but she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday morning.
Brutal Attack and Initial Treatment
The 11-year-old girl was a victim of a brutal rape in a village within Muzaffarpur’s Kudhni police station area on May 26. Following the sexual assault, her attacker allegedly inflicted severe wounds, ripping her stomach and chest and slitting her throat. She was initially admitted to SKMCH in Muzaffarpur, but seeing her critical state, doctors there referred her to PMCH in Patna for specialized care.
Upon reaching PMCH, the victim’s family found themselves pleading with doctors for immediate treatment, but their pleas reportedly went unheard for hours. The girl’s innocent life hung in the balance as she lay in the ambulance.
Upon learning of the appalling situation, Bihar Congress state president Rajesh Ram rushed to PMCH, where he led protests against the hospital administration, raising slogans. It was this public outcry and the intervention of the superintendent in charge that finally led to the girl’s admission to the ICU.
Accused Arrested
The horrific attack on the 11-year-old occurred when Rohit Sahni (30), a fish seller from Kudhni police station area, allegedly abducted her. After the rape, he attempted to murder her, slitting her throat by about an inch and using a sharp weapon to further injure her chest and stomach. Police recovered her slippers, clothes, and a blade from a cornfield near the incident site. The victim was so severely injured that she could only communicate her ordeal through gestures. Rohit Sahni was arrested by police late on Monday night following the incident.
