Muzaffarpur/Patna: In a sweet symbol of Bihar’s agricultural pride, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are set to receive a premium consignment of Muzaffarpur’s Shahi Litchis — known for their rich flavour, juiciness and fragrance.

District authorities in Muzaffarpur are now preparing to select the orchard from which the finest litchis will be harvested and dispatched. A high-level meeting, chaired by the Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC), will be held on Wednesday to finalise the orchard selection. The process will include stringent quality checks to ensure that only the best of the crop reaches the country’s top constitutional offices.

According to district officials, the selection committee will include agricultural scientists, the District Agriculture Officer, the Assistant Director of the Horticulture Department, the Director of the National Litchi Research Centre, Bihar Litchi Producer Association president Bachcha Prasad Singh, and litchi entrepreneur RK Kedia.

Once the orchard is shortlisted, samples of the fruit will undergo quality testing to assess sweetness, pulp content, and overall shelf life. Only after passing the tests will the litchis be packed in specially designed boxes for dispatch to Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Prime Minister’s residence.

Officials confirmed that the packaging will also reflect the royal status of Muzaffarpur’s litchis, showcasing not just the produce but also the heritage and agro-industrial identity of Bihar.

The Shahi Litchi, which holds the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, is one of Bihar’s most celebrated horticultural exports and a vital part of the state’s identity on the national agricultural map.
