Patna: The weather in Bihar is expected to remain dry on the first day of Navratri, with no possibility of heavy rain across the state today. However, the Meteorological Department has forecasted rain in 12 districts of eastern Bihar on October 4.

In light of the recent surge in the Kosi river’s water level and the breach of the Western Kosi dam, concerns are rising regarding the increased water pressure on the Saharsa-Manasi railway section, which is crucial for the Kosi region. Railways have issued an alert till October 15, and teams of officials are continuously inspecting the rail tracks to monitor the situation. Adding to the concerns, heavy rainfall has been predicted in Nepal on October 2, which could further impact water levels in Bihar.

Meanwhile, the water level of rivers in northern and eastern Bihar decreased on Wednesday. However, many flood-affected residents remain displaced, seeking refuge along embankments and roads, along with their children and cattle. These families are facing severe shortages of essential supplies such as food, water, milk, and medicines. According to the Disaster Management Department, 14.62 lakh people in 17 districts are currently surrounded by floodwaters.

The Patna Meteorological Department has also predicted normal to above-normal rainfall for most parts of Bihar during the Navratri period, with a 30 to 40 percent likelihood. The monsoon is expected to withdraw in October, though meteorologists predict it may extend until October 15 this year. During this period, both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain above normal.

Floods have significantly affected agriculture in Bihar, with standing crops on 2,24,597 hectares of land impacted. Of this, crop damage on 91,817 hectares is estimated to exceed 33 percent. Fresh assessments will be conducted once the water recedes.

Agriculture Minister Mangal Pandey has directed officials to complete the crop damage assessment within a week. The most severely affected districts include Supaul, Saharsa, Sitamarhi, West Champaran, Raxaul, Shivhar, Begusarai, Muzaffarpur, Chhapra, and Gopalganj.
