Notorious Criminal Ajit Rai Shot Dead in Muzaffarpur Rented House; Police Suspect Gang Rivalry

Muzaffarpur: Ajit Rai, a known criminal from Sitamarhi district, was shot dead inside a rented house in Muzaffarpur’s Doctors Colony near SKMCH on Friday night. The incident took place around 9 PM in the Ahiyapur police station area. Rai was reportedly alone when unidentified assailants entered the house and shot him twice — once in the chest and once in the stomach — leading to his death on the spot.
According to police, Rai had moved into the rented accommodation just 15 days ago. He was residing there with a woman named Shilpi, who had stepped out to buy food when the murder occurred. Upon her return, she found Rai lying in a pool of blood on the bed and raised an alarm.
Police Begin Investigation, FSL Team Collects Forensic Evidence
Local residents gathered near the scene as news of the shooting spread. City DSP-2 Vinita Sinha and Ahiyapur Police Station in-charge Rohan Kumar rushed to the location to begin an investigation. A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) was also deployed and collected multiple samples from the scene.
The room has been sealed by the police, and both the house owner and Shilpi have been taken into custody for questioning. Investigators have also recovered three mobile phones from the spot. Their call records and data are being examined for possible leads.
Ajit Rai: A History of Crime and Violence
Ajit Rai was a native of Gausnagar in Sitamarhi’s Mahindwara police station area, although he also owned a house at Jiyalal Chowk in Muzaffarpur. Due to fear of police surveillance, he preferred to live under the radar in rented accommodations.
Police revealed that Rai had a long criminal history with cases registered in Jharkhand and various districts of North Bihar, including charges of robbery, extortion, and bomb attacks. In 2017, he had survived a bomb attack near Koralhiya. He was also accused of demanding ₹10 lakh extortion from a former mukhiya’s husband in Runnisaidpur.
Gang Rivalry Suspected, CCTV Footage Under Review
While the motive is yet to be confirmed, initial police suspicions point toward personal enmity or gang rivalry. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the culprits and reconstruct the crime scene timeline.
“Ajit had a criminal record across multiple states. The woman he was living with revealed that her husband has also served jail time in a murder case,” said DSP Vinita Sinha.
Ajit’s criminal dossier and phone records are under review, and the investigation is focusing on multiple angles, including past rivalries, extortion links, and his associates in Bihar and Jharkhand.
Family and Background
Ajit is survived by his wife Ragini Kumari, who lives in their native village, along with their three daughters and a son. Shilpi, the woman staying with him at the time of the incident, is reportedly from the Rampur Hari area.
Police are waiting for statements from Rai’s family before drawing any definitive conclusions. Meanwhile, the search for the attackers continues.
