Patna: The much-awaited Bharat-Nepal Border Road Project, aimed at strengthening border security and boosting connectivity, remains incomplete even after 15 years. Of the total 554 km stretch in Bihar, 124 km of construction is still pending. The state’s road construction department has now set a target to complete it by December 2025.
Approved in 2010 by the Union Home Ministry, the project was initiated to enhance security and improve transportation along the Bihar-Nepal border. While 430 km of the road has been completed, work is still in progress across various districts.
The road spans across West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj, with 8 out of 17 sections completed so far. The current progress includes:
- Madhubani: 2 sections completed
- Supaul: 1 section completed
- Araria: 3 out of 4 sections completed
- Sitamarhi: 2 out of 4 sections completed
Once completed, this project will curb illegal activities, strengthen border surveillance, and enhance connectivity in the seven affected districts.
The India-Nepal Border Road Project spans across three states—Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar:
- Uttar Pradesh: 640 km
- Bihar: 564 km
- Uttarakhand: 173 km
The total cost of the project is ₹3,853 crore, while the Bihar segment alone now costs ₹2,481 crore. The road runs from Gobarhiya (Madanpur) near the UP border to Galgalia in West Bengal.
Authorities are now pushing to complete the remaining work, ensuring improved road connectivity and better border management between India and Nepal.
