Parents Donate Kidneys to Children in First-Ever Dual Transplant at AIIMS Patna

Patna: AIIMS Patna has achieved a medical milestone by performing two successful kidney transplants simultaneously for the first time. The operations took place on January 20 and 21, with a medical team collaborating with experts from PGI Chandigarh. In both cases, parents donated kidneys to their children, giving them a new lease on life.

One transplant involved a young man from Sitamarhi who received a kidney from his 65-year-old mother. The other recipient was a medical student from Jehanabad whose 53-year-old father donated a kidney. Both procedures were successful, and all patients are reported to be in good health.

AIIMS Executive Director Dr Saurabh Vashnery praised the 13-member kidney transplant team, which included specialists and nursing staff such as Dr Amresh Krishna, Dr Amresh Gunjan, Dr Ramesh Bhadani, and Dr Ajit, for their crucial role in the operations’ success. Dr Vashnery also highlighted the affordability of kidney transplants at AIIMS Patna, noting that patients can also benefit from central and state government healthcare schemes. The hospital plans to increase the frequency of kidney transplants to two per week in the near future.

Dr Amresh emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes in preventing kidney diseases. He explained that healthy individuals between the ages of 60 and 70 can be considered as kidney donors. However, kidney transplants are not possible from individuals with mental disabilities or children below 18 years of age. He also stressed the importance of managing sugar and blood pressure levels for kidney health.
