Patna: In response to intensifying heatwave conditions across Bihar, Patna District Magistrate Dr Chandrashekhar Singh has ordered all schools in the district — from pre-primary to senior secondary, including Anganwadi centres — to suspend classes after 11:30am from May 12 to 17. The decision follows a sharp rise in temperatures and growing concern over children’s vulnerability to heat-related illness.
“The afternoon heat poses a serious risk to young students. This decision has been made purely with their safety in mind,” Dr Singh said in his directive, which applies to both government and private institutions.
The move comes amid persistent heatwave warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which recorded temperatures above 40°C in 16 districts on Saturday. Motihari in East Champaran recorded 41°C — six degrees above normal — and was the only district officially declared under heatwave conditions. Gaya (41.8°C), Sheikhpura (41.7°C), Patna (40.7°C), and Bhagalpur (40.4°C) also experienced sweltering conditions, with the IMD predicting no relief over the next three to four days.
Schools have been directed to reschedule timetables accordingly. Parents are advised to ensure children stay indoors during peak afternoon hours and remain hydrated. “We urge families to keep children safe and out of the sun,” said the DM.
