Under the Hit and Run Yojana launched in 2022, Patna has paid Rs 8 crore 28 lakh to families of 414 deceased victims and Rs 7 lakh 50 thousand to 15 injured persons.

Patna: At least 427 victims of hit-and-run road accidents in Patna district have received compensation under the Hit and Run Yojana since its launch in 2022. According to data from the District Transport Office, Rs 8 crore 28 lakh has been paid to the dependents of 414 deceased victims, while Rs 7 lakh 50 thousand was given to 15 people who suffered serious injuries.

Between January 1, 2022 and June 4, 2025, Patna recorded 4,102 road accidents, including 2,223 hit-and-run cases and 1,879 non-hit-and-run cases. Under the scheme, the dependent of a deceased victim is eligible for up to Rs 2 lakh, while an injured person can receive up to Rs 50,000.

Patna DTO Upendra Kumar Pal urged people to remain aware of the scheme, emphasising that it has provided significant relief to families unable to identify the vehicle or driver responsible. “The application process has been kept very simple to ensure victim families receive timely assistance,” he said.

Applications can be submitted online through the Transport Department portal and at the DTO office, along with documents including the FIR, post-mortem report, Aadhar cards of the deceased and dependents, bank passbook photocopy, and a family list where applicable. Compensation claims for accidents after April 1, 2022 are processed through the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal if the vehicle at fault is unidentified.
