Patna Municipal Corporation Launches Indian Voter League to Promote Electoral Participation
Patna: In a bid to raise awareness among voters in Patna city, the Patna Municipal Corporation has initiated the Indian Voter League (IVL) starting from May 10. This unique initiative employs cricket matches as a platform to inspire ordinary citizens to exercise their voting rights. The program was inaugurated by HR Srinivasan, Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar, alongside the District Magistrate and Municipal Commissioner.
Emphasizing the importance of constitutional rights, HR Srinivasan addressed the public during the event, expressing concern over Patna’s low voter turnout. He urged citizens to mobilize their peers and family members, reminding them that voting is a fundamental right bestowed by the Constitution that must be exercised.
Acknowledging the efforts of the Municipal Corporation, District Magistrate and District Election Officer Shirsat Kapil Ashok commended their ongoing voter awareness campaigns. He praised the corporation’s workers for not only maintaining cleanliness but also actively engaging in public awareness initiatives.
Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar echoed the sentiment, encouraging citizens to fulfill their civic duty on June 1st, Election Day, emphasizing that it is not only a holiday but also an opportunity to participate in democracy.
During the cricket matches, distinguished guests boosted players’ morale by hitting fours and sixes on the field. Meanwhile, cultural programs by Municipal Corporation’s brand ambassador Neetu Navgeet and commentary by RJ Shashi added to the event’s vibrancy.
To further promote voter participation, a laser show was organized, urging people to cast their votes on June 1.
The Indian Voter League matches will be held from May 10 to May 25, spanning various zones along the Digha from JP Setu Ghat to Gate Number- 88 Ghat. A total of 75 teams, including first-time voters, have been formed by the Municipal Corporation, with matches scheduled every evening.
Each team comprises 15 players, and representatives from various sectors including the 75 wards of the Municipal Corporation, social service organizations, NGOs, officers, journalists, and students are expected to participate.
In a pioneering move, the Patna Municipal Corporation has introduced pink toilets exclusively for women, operated by self-help groups and regularly cleaned by Swachhangini. These facilities, situated along the banks of the Ganga, aim to provide convenience and hygiene for female attendees and are free of charge.
