Patna: The Bihar government has launched an alert across the state following a rise in Covid-19 cases, with 21 infections confirmed in Patna. In response, hospitals and medical colleges held a mock drill on Saturday to ensure oxygen systems are functioning and ready should cases surge further.
The exercise, supervised by the State Health Committee, focused on the operational status of oxygen plants, pipelines, cylinders and backup supplies. Government-run LNJP Hospital was among the facilities tested, with staff examining whether oxygen was reaching patients without disruption.
Subhash Chandra, director of LNJP, said: “We run our oxygen plant every morning and have a backup of cylinders. If a Covid-positive patient arrives, we conduct checks and provide instructions. In more serious cases, we refer them to the dedicated Covid centres at NMCH or PMCH.”
Health officials were also tasked with assessing the preparedness of medical personnel, ensuring they are trained to manage emergencies. Civil surgeons and college administrators were directed to report on infrastructure and logistical readiness.
The renewed focus comes as four new Covid-19 cases were reported in Patna on Saturday, following seven cases detected on Friday. Patients have been identified in areas including Kankarbagh, Agamkuan and RPS Mod. Of the latest infections, four were confirmed at NMCH and three through private laboratories.
According to the Civil Surgeon’s office, 26 samples were tested on Friday, with seven returning positive results. This has raised the city’s total confirmed case count to 21, prompting increased vigilance from the health department.
Officials emphasised that the mock drill is a preventive measure, not a sign of crisis, urging the public to remain calm but cautious. The department has advised residents to wear masks in crowded areas, maintain hand hygiene and seek testing at the first sign of symptoms.
