Patna: Patna’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avkash Kumar has been transferred after a brief five-month tenure, marking one of the shortest postings in recent memory for the city’s top police officer. The announcement came as Avkash addressed the media, sharing details of the police department’s achievements under his leadership.
Despite the short stint, Avkash reported a significant reduction in serious crimes such as murder, dacoity, loot, and extortion in Patna during the first half of June compared to the same period in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. According to the crime data released, Patna Police achieved a 90 percent detection rate in robbery and dacoity cases, with most of the accused apprehended.
Responding to questions about his abrupt transfer, Avkash expressed no discontent, stating that such decisions are a routine part of government service. “Transfer-posting is done for many reasons. It is the Chief Minister’s privilege. This is a part of the job, and it is not in our or your hands,” he said, adding that it is unfair to draw unnecessary conclusions.
Avkash has now been posted to BMP-1, bringing his tenure in Patna to a close just before the end of June. His transfer has sparked discussion given the department’s recent performance improvements, but officials maintain it is a standard administrative move.
