Patna to Get Five New Public Grounds to Ease Pressure on Gandhi Maidan, Says Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary

Patna: Patna will get five new large public grounds along JP Path to reduce the burden on Gandhi Maidan, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced on Wednesday, citing the need for alternative spaces for civic events in a rapidly growing city.

The announcement was made during a review meeting of the Mukhyamantri Samagra Shahri Vikas Yojana (Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Urban Development Scheme), attended by senior officials and MLAs from the district.

“With Patna’s fast-paced growth, there is an urgent need to create new public spaces. Gandhi Maidan cannot bear the burden of all civic events,” Choudhary said.

The Deputy CM also raised concerns about the duplication of work by government departments. He warned that overlapping construction projects by multiple agencies were leading to delays and wasted resources. “Two agencies working on the same project is not development—it’s mismanagement,” he said, urging departments to coordinate more closely, especially in the development of roads and public buildings.

As part of the urban development plan, Choudhary directed that roads be extended by 300 metres beyond the main arteries to improve last-mile connectivity in the city’s expanding peripheries. He also called for integrated drainage systems to be planned alongside roads to prevent waterlogging.

“No foundation stone ceremonies will be held until project plans are fully clear and marked,” he added, stressing the need for accountability and transparency in implementation.

Urban Development Minister Jibesh Kumar and Legislative Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav were also present and voiced support for more coordinated and efficient urban planning.
