Patna University to Introduce Online Attendance System for Teachers and Students

Patna: Teachers at Patna University will now mark their attendance online using a selfie-based system, as part of a new biometric attendance initiative. The move, which also includes digital attendance for students, aims to enhance academic discipline and ensure transparency in university operations.
According to a directive from S Siddharth, Additional Chief Secretary of Bihar’s Education Department, attendance records for teachers, non-teaching staff, and students at Patna University and its affiliated colleges will be maintained online. The department is developing a mobile app to facilitate the process.
How the System Will Work
Teachers and university staff will need to download the attendance app on their smartphones. After logging in with their credentials, they must take a live selfie within 500 meters of the university campus and upload it to mark their presence. Salaries of teachers and employees will be linked to this attendance system.
For students, attendance will be recorded using tablet-based biometric systems in classrooms. The Bihar State Educational Infrastructure Development Corporation has been assigned the responsibility of developing the necessary hardware and software for the project.
Government Push for Digital Attendance
The online attendance system for teachers is already in place in government schools, and now Patna University will follow suit. In a letter sent to Vice Chancellor of Patna University, Siddharth emphasized that 2-5 tablet sets should be provided in each department and division to facilitate attendance tracking for both faculty and staff.
The initiative follows a meeting held on Tuesday, where officials discussed measures to create a more structured and efficient academic environment at the university.
