Patna: Patna’s air quality has sharply deteriorated, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 162 on April 26, 2025, placing it in the ‘Unhealthy’ category. The major pollutant contributing to this alarming level is PM2.5, which stands at 70.9 µg/m³—well above safe limits. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure can pose serious risks, especially to children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
The situation has worsened over the past week, with AQI figures climbing from 80 on April 19 to 188 on April 25. The spike in pollution levels coincides with a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 42°C, potentially exacerbating the pollution.
While Patna struggles, cities like Katihar have reported significantly better air quality, with AQI levels as low as 35. Authorities are urging Patna residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours and use protective gear like masks and air purifiers. Immediate action is needed to address the city’s growing air pollution crisis.
