Radio Meter to Revolutionize Rainfall Forecasting in Bihar

Patna : A state-of-the-art radio meter is set to be installed at the Meteorological Centre in Bihar, offering advanced weather insights that will enhance rainfall forecasting accuracy. The device will provide real-time data on rain intensity, duration, and the size of raindrops as soon as clouds begin to form. It will also measure moisture levels in the air, offering a detailed assessment of atmospheric conditions.
Ashish Kumar, Director of the Meteorological Centre, highlighted the significance of the radio meter, noting that while current weather forecasts rely heavily on satellite data, the new technology will provide far more localized and precise information. It will allow meteorologists to predict which areas will receive heavy rainfall, where there may be light showers, and even where clouds may dissipate without producing rain.
In addition to the radio meter, lightning sensors will be installed in Bhagalpur, East Champaran, and Darbhanga. These sensors, developed in collaboration with the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, will have a detection radius of up to 500 kilometers, providing extensive coverage for lightning predictions across the state. Currently, lightning sensors are operational in Gaya.
